    How to calculate macrame cord length

    Every macrame cord calculation comes down to one formula, and one detail that catches almost everybody out the first time.

    Cut length = fold × (multiplier × knotted length + plain length + fringe) + buffer

    The detail is the fold. When you mount a cord with a Lark's Head knot, you fold it in half over the dowel, and both halves then have to do the knotting. So the famous "cut four times the length" rule actually means cut eight times the finished length once the fold is counted. Halving that is the single most common way to ruin a project, and unlike fabric, cord cannot be joined invisibly once it is cut short.

    The fold is where most projects go wrong. Each leg needs the full multiplier, so the piece you cut is double that.

    The basic rule, worked through

    Say your knotted section will be 18 inches of standard square knots, no fringe, mounted with Lark's Head knots:

    That is 13 feet of cord to produce 18 inches of knotting. The ratio genuinely is that dramatic, and it is why macrame projects get expensive faster than beginners expect.

    Why "knotted length" is not project length

    This is the part most guides skip, and it matters enormously for plant hangers. The multiplier only applies to cord that is actually being tied into knots. A plant hanger might be 90 cm long but have only 25 cm of knotting, with the rest hanging as plain straight cord. Multiplying the whole 90 cm by 4 would have you buying roughly twice the cord you need.

    Only the knotted section is multiplied. The plain drop and the fringe are counted once.

    So the calculator asks for three lengths separately: the knotted section, which gets multiplied; the plain hanging drop, which does not; and the fringe, which does not either. Get those three right and the answer is trustworthy.

    Knot density multipliers

    Different knots eat cord at very different rates, because they differ in how much cord they consume for each centimetre of vertical progress they make.

    If your piece mixes styles, use the densest one for the section that dominates. Over-buying costs money; under-buying costs the project.

    The test swatch method

    Multipliers are averages across many makers, and hand tension varies more than most people realise. A tight knotter can burn 20% more cord than a relaxed one working the same pattern. If you are selling your work, or committing to an expensive cord, tie a small test swatch first.

    Two measurements and one division give you a multiplier that matches your own hands.

    Measure one leg before you start, tie 15–20 cm of your actual pattern in your actual cord, then measure what is left. The cord consumed divided by the finished length is your multiplier, and it beats any table. The calculator will use it if you switch on the test swatch option.

    Does cord thickness change the length needed?

    Yes, but in two directions that partly cancel out, which is why the question confuses people.

    Per knot, thicker cord uses more length: a 5 mm square knot swallows noticeably more than a 3 mm one, because the cord has to travel around a fatter bundle. But thicker cord also covers horizontal width far faster, so you need fewer cords in the first place. On the same 60 cm dowel at standard spacing you would mount roughly 70 cords of 3 mm but only about 44 of 5 mm.

    Thicker cord uses more per knot but far fewer cords overall — which is why the chunky version needs less cord in total.

    In practice the second effect usually wins, and a chunky piece needs less total cord than a fine one of the same size — it just looks bolder and has less detail. What thick cord does demand is a bigger safety buffer, because running short on 6 mm rope is obvious and impossible to disguise.

    How many cords fit on a dowel?

    Cords = dowel width ÷ (cord thickness × spacing factor)

    A Lark's Head knot puts two strands of cord side by side and needs a little room to breathe, so the spacing factor runs from about 2.5 for tightly packed cords to 3.5 for a deliberately airy piece. Always cut an extra cord or two beyond the calculated number — you will want them.

    Project-specific estimates

    Wall hangings

    Measure the dowel for cord count and the knotted section for length. A 60 cm dowel with 3 mm cord, 45 cm of standard square knots and 15 cm of fringe comes out around 4.4 m per cord across roughly 70 cords — over 300 m in total. Large wall hangings are cord-hungry, so price the cord before committing to the size.

    Plant hangers

    Enter the knotted sections and the plain drop separately, or the answer will be roughly double what you need. A typical hanger uses 4 cords folded over the ring to give 8 working strands, with knotting concentrated at the top and just above the pot.

    Keychains and bracelets

    Small, and usually single-strand rather than folded, so set the attachment option accordingly. A 7 inch bracelet in 2 mm cord needs roughly 28–35 inches per working cord, rising sharply if you are adding beads or dense patterning.

    Before you cut: these are planning figures, and macrame is less forgiving than most crafts because cord cannot be joined invisibly. When the estimate sits near a spool boundary, buy the larger spool. Leftover cord always gets used; a project stopped three rows from the end does not.
