How to calculate a tip

A tip is a percentage of the bill. Multiply the bill by the tip rate over 100 to get the tip, then add it back:

Tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)  ·  Total = bill + tax + tip

So a 20% tip on a $50 bill is 50 × 0.20 = $10, for a $60 total. To split, divide the total by the number of people. The receipt on the right does all of this live as you change any input.

Pre-tax vs post-tax tipping

Because sales tax isn't part of the service, it's perfectly acceptable to tip on the pre-tax subtotal — and on a large bill that saves a little. Tipping on the post-tax total is more generous and easier to eyeball. This calculator supports both: toggle whether the tip is figured on the subtotal or on the subtotal plus tax, and the receipt shows exactly how the numbers change.
